Geography and Environment is seeking an outstanding candidate to fill a research position on a STFC-Newton Fund project on “Remote Sensing for Sustainable Intensification in China through Improved Farm Decision-Making”. The objective of this project is to connect reliable remotely sensed products or proxies to farmers using (i) fusion of remotely sensed data to create fine resolution datasets for crop and soil monitoring and (ii) the production of AgriTech-relevant data at fine resolution through extension services such as the Science and Technology Backyard programme to ensure complete information communication. You will be responsible for delivering AgriTech management information from remote sensing data. In particular you will be processing time series of remote sensing data to derive crop phenological information and use them to predict crop yield at local to regional scales. You will have a PhD* (awarded or close to submitting) or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in remote sensing , and experience in time series data analysis to derive phenological information. You will have a fluency in Chinese in order to communicate efficiently with the Chinses project partners, knowledge of Chinese agricultural systems and factors affecting changes in agricultural practices and strong image processing and data analysis skills. Some experience in Chinese agricultural policy would be advantageous. The position is tenable from 15 September 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter.
