JOB DESCRIPTION:

Applications are invited for an exciting new research position. We seek a Research Assistant to work with a multi-disciplinary team on sedentary behaviours with stroke survivors. Stroke is the most common cause of adult disability and is the third most common cause of death in the UK. Sedentary behaviours are a distinct class of behaviours where sitting or lying is the dominant posture and energy expenditure is low – it is not simply a lack of physical activity. Sedentary behaviours are a risk factor for health even in people who meet physical activity guidelines. This research team is at the centre of an internationally important debate on the emerging role of time spent in sedentary behaviours on health. We have shown that stroke survivors are highly sedentary. Recent international guidelines encourage the reduction of sedentary behaviour after a stroke but how to do this is unknown. Feedback on sedentary behaviour is a key component of behaviour change strategies but validity and acceptability of devices to measure and provide feedback to stroke survivors is under researched. From a selection, we will determine the most appropriate device for use with ambulatory stroke survivors to support future intervention development. The post is part time (17.5 hours per week) with funding available for 17 months (0.5 FTE). The post holder will be based in the Physical Activity for Health Research Centre (http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/education/rke/centres-groups/pahrc) and will work closely with the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences (http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/clinical-brain-sciences) at the University of Edinburgh. This is an opportunity to develop your research skills and gain research experience in a world-leading research establishment. Salary Scale: £26,537 to £30,738 per annum, pro rata. Closing date: 5pm (GMT) on Tuesday 5th January 2016 Vacancy Reference: 034933
