JOB DESCRIPTION:

Consultant in Acute Medicine This is an exciting opportunity to help reshape acute care in the Huntingdon area, with opportunities to develop and launch new medical services. The post is for ten PAs. There is no overnight on call commitment. We are currently running a trial of seven day working with the acute medics covering the medical short stay unit on Saturday and Sunday mornings with two compensatory days off the following week. The acute medical consultants currently run a 30 bedded medical short stay unit MSSU and an ambulatory care service. The hospital also has a 19 bed Acute Assessment Unit AAU where all medical admissions go. It is looked after by the acute medics from 0800 – 1600 and then by the on call medical consultant overnight. In the last year we have focused on improving time to consultant review, promoted early decision-making and expanded the ambulatory care service. This has allowed us to reduce length of stay and prevent some admissions. Now we want to improve our patient experience, expand teaching and training opportunities in acute medicine and improve access to seven day diagnostics. We are looking for a motivated acute medic who would like to join our team and help us lead the hospital in delivering excellent acute care. The hospital’s aim is to develop an innovative integrated care model, which relies on staff having the knowledge, skills and attitude to be able to think laterally and develop new models of healthcare. The holder of this post will be expected to embrace this opportunity. Hinchingbrooke Health Care NHS Trust provides acute services to the 161,000 population of the Huntingdonshire area which includes the pleasant historical market towns of Huntingdon, St Ives and St Neots. Although still essentially a rural community, the area has experienced rapid growth over the last 30 years and a rising population. The area is well served for all age groups, with a range of highly regarded schools and varied opportunities for leisure activities. The hospital is in Huntingdon which is midway between Cambridge and Peterborough and less than an hour by train from London. It is a modern, purpose built hospital, opened in 1983 and provides a comprehensive range of all medical and surgical specialties. It also enjoys a high level of support from the local community. Hinchingbrooke was until recently managed by Circle and since Circle’s departure in March 2015 the hospital workforce have continued to unite around an objective to become one of the top ten district general hospitals in the country by excelling in four areas: patient safety, patient experience, staff engagement and value for money. Organisational change has resulted though great importance is still placed on having clinician-led clinical divisions. For an informal discussion please contact: Clinical Lead for Acute Medicine Dr R Connick rona.connicknhs.net or Acute Medicine Consultant Dr D Ward davidkeithwardnhs.net.
