Kinds of employment
The minimum working age in Italy is 16. There are three main types of contract: 1. Permanent and temporary employment contracts with obligatory working hours, workplace and duties. These may be extended only once. 2. Extendable employment contracts, flexible forms of temporary employment, with flexible working hours and workplace but they must be coordinated with the employer. 3. Freelance employment contracts for professionals, consultants and professional activities, including manual trades, with full autonomy concerning working hours and methods. The above contractual forms are open to all professional grades. In Italy the system of direct employment applies for any type of working relationship for all employees (with the exception of non-EU workers): contracts of employment are drawn up without the aid of public departments. The only requirement for employers at the time of recruitment, is to notify the job centre in the area where their headquarters are located, the day before work begins. The employer must also give the worker a signed statement containing the data recorded in the libro matricola [company employee register] giving information on the financial and legal employment conditions applicable to the current working relationship. The employment contract may be amended only to improve the worker’s conditions, with his or her consent.
