JOB DESCRIPTION:

As part of the European project ‘NanoMag’, the Technical University of Denmark, Department of Micro- and Nanotechnology and Department of Physics offer a postdoctoral position. The NanoMag project aims to improve and redefine existing analysis methods for magnetic nanoparticles and nanobeads to form a self-consistent picture of the connection between the structure, magnetic properties and functionality of the magnetic nanoparticles. Moreover, the project includes applications of such nanoparticles for bioanalysis. Working at DTU on the NanoMag project, you will contribute to the characterization of magnetic nanoparticles, primarily by use of Mössbauer spectroscopy, and be part of obtaining a general understanding of the particle properties in collaboration with leading experts on magnetic nanoparticles and metrology. Moreover you will be part of developing and using lab-on-a-chip biosensors based on a magnetic readout and applying these for detection of proteins and DNA. The work in this multidisciplinary project will be carried out with much interaction with European partners in the project as well as with researchers at DTU. Responsibilities and tasks The postdoc will spend about one third of his/her time on physical characterization of magnetic nanoparticle and magnetic nanobead samples using Mössbauer spectroscopy and on combining these results with those obtained by project partners by other experimental techniques. The postdoc will spend the remaining time on developing methods for magnetic biodetection of proteins and DNA attached to nanobeads in a lab-on-a-chip setting. This work will build on top of existing activities in the Magnetic Systems group at DTU Nanotech related to on-chip magnetic biosensing using an optomagnetic readout. The work will also involve the necessary operations to perform bioassays, such as the functionalization of magnetic beads and biodetection experiments. During his/her work, the postdoc will contribute to training of bachelor, master and PhD students, and the postdoc will be responsible for reporting to EU. Required qualifications Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent in physics, chemistry or nanoscience/nanotechnology. Moreover, the candidate must have: - extended experience with DNA detection in a lab-on-a-chip setting - experience with fabrication of lab-on-a-chip systems - experience with electrical measurements (such as lock-in technique) - experience with applications of magnetic nanoparticles or magnetic nanobeads - experience with magnetic characterization techniques, in particular Mössbauer spectroscopy, the analysis of data obtained using these techniques and their application on magnetic nanoparticles. Preference will be given to candidates with - excellent interpersonal, communication and networking skills. - peer-reviewed publications in the fields discussed above - demonstrated ability to independently advance a cross-disciplinary research activity in a project with multiple collaborators.
