Ph.D. Position (m/f) in the area of Marine Biogeochemistry code no. 2016/KO 2 The place of employment is Geesthacht. The Institute of Coastal Research investigates the physical and biogeochemical dynamics of the coastal ocean and the impact of anthropogenic influences on the natural state. One main focus is the coastal observing system COSYNA (Coastal Observing System for Northern and Arctic Seas) for the systematic observation and modelling of the North Sea, Baltic Sea and Arctic coastal waters. Within this framework, the main focus of the department of In-Situ Measurements is to study physical and biogeochemical processes in the North Sea with focus on the German Bight. We are looking for a qualified and motivated student to investigate coastal and regional carbon cycle dynamics in this particular area. The research project will have access to already available datasets from the COSYNA database, and will provide the opportunity to study carbon dynamics within the FerryBox network. We invite applications for a Ph.D position (m/f) in the area of Marine Biogeochemistry starting as soon as possible. The position is initially limited to three years with the degree being awarded through the University of Hamburg or Kiel. Your tasks include: - analysis of existing large datasets from the COSYNA coastal observing system - using state of the art alkalinity, pCO2 and pH continuous sensors to capture the carbon dynamics in surface waters of the North Sea - application of these technologies in different regions of interest (open North Sea vs German Bight) - development of sampling strategies targeting different time scales (seasonal, day-night, tidal cycle) - development of strategies for combining measurements and modelling studies into focussed campaigns investigating specific key coastal regions - working as an integral part of a motivated multidisciplinary team within the institute and external academic partners - scientific publications and presentations Preferred Qualifications: - a Master¿s in oceanography, marine biology, geosciences, or related disciplines - academic publication record - good programming skills (e.g. experience with Matlab, R, C, C++) - good knowledge of English (written and oral) - high degree of creativity and flexibility; ability to work under pressure - good communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team with scientists, engineers, and technicians Desirable qualifications: - knowledge of coastal and shelf sea biogeochemical and/or physical processes - international research experience - experience with management of large datasets - experience with analytical techniques: total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon measurements - ship (research cruise) experience We offer: - very good training and preparation for your tasks including excellent further training options - an attractive work environment, where your personal commitment plays an important role, as well as a varied and responsible position in an international setting - an appropriate salary in accordance with the German public tariff (TV-AVH) plus the usual social benefits for the public employment sector The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is an equal opportunity employer for women, minorities, and people with disabilities, and strives to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially. For further questions please contact Dr. Yoana Voynova (yoana.voynova@hzg.de) and Dr. Wilhelm Petersen (wilhelm.petersen@hgz.de). Please send your application indicating job offer code no. 2016/KO 2 to Max-Planck-Straße 1, 21502 Geesthacht, Germany, or preferably to the email-address: personal@hzg.de, and include your CV, a list of publications, description of research experience, and a list of references. Closing date for applications is March 18, 2016. - Geforderte Anlagen: Complete applications indicating job offer code no. 2016/.
