Due to rapidly expanding UK & worldwide transportation opportunities, a position of Senior Engineer has been created within the company in our Transportation team. Sitting within the Transportation Structures Practice, this is an exciting opportunity for any candidate who is keen to undertake an interesting and varied role in leading the delivery of engineering on Atkins’ rail projects portfolio.Atkins Transportation Division is one of the largest transport consultancies in the UK and is a leading supplier of engineering services to government, regulatory and local authorities, infrastructure owners and operators, Network Rail, train operating companies, design and build contractors and other clients within the transportation sector.Our core workload is typically the delivery of multidisciplinary designs ranging from feasibility studies to detailed design, working either direct for rail industry clients like Network Rail and Train Operating companies or increasingly for design and build contractors. Our projects vary from some of the largest multi-disciplinary schemes in the UK to minor design commissions and include all elements of railway civil engineering including bridge, station and lineside infrastructure schemes.We are currently recruiting for a Senior Civil Engineer to become a key member of the team in our Swindon office, overseeing the production of and reviewing engineering sketches, drawings, design calculations, technical specifications and reports.Please note that the closing date for applications is 31st March 2016.ResponsibilitiesLead the technical delivery of civil engineering projects / civil engineering input in to complex, multi-disciplinary projects.Use analytical skills to derive potential solutions to engineering problems and engineering judgement to appraise different options and recommend the most suitable option.Oversee the production of and review high quality design documentation including sketches, drawings, calculations, reports and specifications.Carry out designs, design calculations, reports and specifications to industry and national standards.Stay abreast of industry developments and changes in standards. Ensure that all design submissions produced by those under your supervision are compliant with all relevant standards as set out in the company’s QSE Procedures.Developing more junior staff by technical training and mentoring.Responsible for the completion of projects to time and budget.Requirements TechnicalBEng / MEng or MSc degree in civil engineering or equivalent.Membership of a relevant professional body, such as the Institution of Civil Engineers or IStructE.Intimate knowledge of Network Rail’s GRIP process and the various deliverables required at each stage.Willingness and ability to lead the technical delivery of civil engineering projects and also of the civil engineering aspects of complex, multi-disciplinary projects.Sound understanding of technical principles underlying civil engineering, particularly civil engineering structures.Sound understanding of relevant design standards, including Eurocodes.Sound understanding of Network Rail standards and technical assurance procedures.Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office programmes, particularly Word and Excel. Proven track record of producing high quality deliverables with little supervision.Ability to prepare reports and collate specifications from all parties to the project and to collect other data and statistics necessary for the preparation of progress and technical reportsRelevant rail industry experience of working within a design consultancy essential. Wider knowledge gained from working within a contractor and/or client organisation desirable.Sound interpersonal skills and ability to converse with a wide range of Clients and colleagues across a number of engineering disciplines.Excellent spoken and written English.StakeholderExperience of working with our key clients, e.g. Network Rail and majo
